Assisted living can be an excellent and sometimes necessary option for seniors who wish to maintain independence but need some assistance with daily tasks.

Leisure or lifestyle-oriented communities

These senior housing communities offer several recreational facilities like golf courses, swimming pools, and social events. Other amenities include hobby spaces and travel options (as a community). Seniors also get to choose from a variety of housing options like apartments, villas, cottages, or single-family homes. The focus of such communities is to offer holistic well-being, convenience, and enjoyment to seniors. 

Subsidized housing 

This includes government-funded options for low-income groups. Subsidized housing is primarily offered by the federal, state, and local agencies, and the goal is to make housing far more affordable, allowing seniors to retain their savings and still live in a safe environment. There are several options under subsidized housing, including public housing (funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development), Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, and subsidized apartment buildings. The rent is set at approximately 30% of the household’s income.

Aging population

Additionally, easy access to support staff is crucial for those who require specific attention or personal care.

The cost of senior housing rentals can vary widely depending on the type of facility, the location, and the level of care provided. The national median cost for assisted living is $4,500 per month. Moreover, the cost of independent living communities is generally lower, averaging between $1,500 and $3,500 per month, depending on amenities and location.
